This conference seeks to explore and conte xtualize the configuration\nof the varied\ndesert cultic practices from th e southern Levant and northern Arabia during the\nLate Bronze/Iron Ages th at may have contributed to the emergence of\nthe Yahwistic\ncult. Recent a rchaeological excavations in the Negev\, southern Transjordan and\nHejaz a nd new interpretations of old epigraphic and iconographic\nevidence are ra pidly\nchanging the biblical-based paradigm of the interactions between th e desert\ncults and the Iron Age Levantine religions.
\nThe conferen ce adopts an interdisciplinary approach\, assessing\ntextual\, archaeologi cal\,\nas well as epigraphic data. The papers presented here contribute in a unique\nway to big historical questions of the LBA/IA desert religions: Was\nthere something\nunique in the desert cults? How were the religious experiences shaped by the\ninteractions between the local rituals and the sanctuary cults that\npenetrated from\nthe agricultural lands? The confere nce also touches the much wider debate of the\nrole played by trade&ndash\ ;in copper\, incense\, pastoral products&ndash\;and\ncultural interconnect ions\nin the diffusion of religious ideas. It particularly explores how th ese data\nrelate to those religious practices attested in Judah and Israel of\nthe later Iron Age\nand beyond\, thereby providing new insights into the prehistory of the\nYahweh cult.
