The Local and the Global in American Studies
American Studies Graduate Student Conference
at the University of Alabama

Upon first glance, American Studies is most commonly associated with a place: the Western Hemisphere, North and South America, or the United States as a stand-alone or in relationship to other countries. Scholarship further divides this vast region into smaller units, such as states and cities, to draw conclusions about an area. Place, however, is but one morsel of what this discipline entails. Time, both contemporary and historical, provides additional context for understanding the metamorphosis of an idea, a movement, or a region. As a study rooted in the humanities, this is also the study of people: what they think, how they express themselves, how and where they move, and the tensions between the individual and her/his/their community are just a few of the questions we grapple with in our research. Thus, this year's theme, “The Local and the Global in American Studies” is meant to inspire work on these notions, while also asking what the boundaries of these concepts are and how far we, as scholars, can expand them to include what has yet to be introduced into the field.
The graduate students in the American Studies Department at the University of Alabama invite proposals from graduate students and scholars on topics across all time periods that can be creatively related to the intersections between local, national and transnational communities, while keeping in mind that a community need not be tied to traditional notions about place and time. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of American Studies, the program committee welcomes proposals from fields including, but not limited to, race, gender, and LGBTQ studies, history, art (visual, audio, performance), literature, music, social sciences, media studies, disability studies, and environmental studies.
The intention of this conference is to provide an opportunity for rising scholars to share their work and meet others in a welcoming environment. In an effort to allow for such opportunities, the conference will begin on Thursday, October 4th, with a guest keynote speaker. All presentations will be held on Friday, October 5th between 9am-5pm. The final program will be distributed by the end of September.
The Program Committee will accept proposals for individual presentations (20 minutes), as well as panels with three or four presentations (20 minutes each). Proposals should include a paper title, 300-word abstract, a 100-word bio, and specify any audio-visual requirements. Proposals for panels should include a 150-word abstract explaining the purpose of the panel, plus individual proposal statements, bios and any audio-visual requirements. Proposals are due September 5th and should be emailed to email@example.com
