[Conference CFP] The Future of Holocaust Memory

The Universities of Richmond and Haifa, and the Virginia Holocaust Museum invite proposals for a workshop entitled:

The Future of Holocaust Memory: A global consideration of commemoration held in the American South

September 24-27, 2019, Richmond, Virginia

Recent events in Charlottesville and elsewhere have spurred partner institutions in Haifa and Richmond to invite thoughtful and collective reflection among the community of scholars and practitioners engaged in Holocaust studies. The workshop will include afternoon excursions to contested monuments and museums in the city of Richmond, to allow for discussions of evolving representations of traumatic history.

We invite advanced graduate students and scholars in the early stages of their careers who are engaged in research with the following topics to submit a proposal of no more than 500 words to Professor Arieh Kochavi, University of Haifa, and Dean Martha Merritt, University of Richmond, by May 15, 2019. Invited participants will be asked to develop and submit a 5 to 10-page reflective paper by August 12, 2019. Relevant themes might include:

  • The way Holocaust memory is conceived, taught and practiced in varying mediums, places and in different cultural setting
  • Holocaust memory in the context of current trends such as geo-political changes, political and ideological extremism and the international refugee crisis
  • Emerging new narratives about the Holocaust in different countries
  • Relevance, functions, and effects of sites of Holocaust remembrance (museums, memorial sites, camps) for today's audiences
