[Conference CFP] No Respect: Jewish Humor around The World

We invite proposals for a symposium focused on the varieties of Jewish humor that exist globally. The symposium will take place from February 29-March 2, 2020 at The University of North Carolina Wilmington and is supported by the Charles and Hannah Block Fund and the Rhine Family Endowment for Jewish Studies.

“Jewish humor” is usually assumed to be synonymous with “American Jewish humor,” and this symposium is designed to allow scholars of Jewish humor to think critically about a plurality of Jewish humors. We invite proposals on any topic related to Jewish humor, but we are especially interested in papers that look beyond the American Ashkenazi mainstream.

Proposals should include a 200 word abstract of the presentation, as well as a list of any audio/visual requirements the presentation may require. Additionally, we plan to publish an edited volume of essays based on the presentations at the symposium, so please indicate whether you would be willing to write an essay-length version of your presentation for the volume. Being unable or unwilling to participate in the volume is not required for acceptance to the symposium.

The deadline for proposals is September 1st, 2019
